Salomi Desai is a type and graphic designer from Mumbai, India, whose work reflects a deep commitment to the relationship between writing systems. Trained in both Latin and Indic scripts with a particular focus on Devanagari, she brings a rare versatility to contemporary type design. Her practice grew from an early interest in branding and packaging, fields in which she discovered the expressive potential of customized letters. This curiosity led her to pursue type design in a more dedicated way and eventually shaped her into one of the notable voices working across multiscript typography today.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins in London in 2014, Salomi returned to Mumbai where she applied her design skills to a variety of visual identity projects for local and international clients. A formative period at the font studio Mota Italic strengthened her understanding of letterforms and set the foundation for further study. She later completed a postgraduate diploma in type design at Ésad in Amiens, France, where she developed a multiscript editorial typeface that united Latin and Devanagari. This project marked a significant step in her exploration of bilingual typography and the cultural dialogues it can support.
Salomi joined Universal Thirst in 2021, where she continues to expand her expertise as a type designer. Her portfolio includes the multiscript typeface Tiffin, created for literary publishing and inspired by historical references from Scotland and India. Beyond her design work, she contributes to the Universal Thirst Gazette, a publication and archive dedicated to typographic research, and teaches as a visiting instructor for Devanagari type design courses. Her achievements have been recognized internationally, including her selection as a Woman of Typographic Excellence by the Malee Scholarship and a certificate of merit from the Gerard Unger Scholarship.
