Noopur Datye

Type Designer, Co-Founder EkType, and Multi-Script Innovator

Type Designer Co-Founder EkType

Noopur Datye is a Mumbai-based type designer and calligrapher whose work is deeply connected to the rich diversity of India’s writing systems. A graduate of the Sir J J Institute of Applied Art and a co-founder of the collaborative type foundry Ek Type, she has contributed to the creation of typefaces across numerous Indian scripts, with a particular focus on Devanagari and Bengali. Her portfolio includes custom typefaces developed for television networks such as Star Jalsa and LifeOk, as well as widely adopted open-source families like Mukta Vaani (Gujarati), Mukta Mahee (Gurmukhi), Modak (Latin), the multi-script Baloo series, and contributions to Google’s Noto project (Dogra, Gunjala Gondi, Masaram Gondi). She has also played a key role in developing the expansive Anek multi-script type family.

Noopur’s work has received significant acclaim, earning accolades such as Graphite and Wooden Pencils at D&AD and the Black Elephant at the Kyoorius Design Awards. Her typefaces have been highlighted in 365 Typo and featured in Typographica’s Favourite Typefaces of 2015 and 2016. As an active member of Aksharaya, she regularly conducts workshops on calligraphy and letterform design at leading design schools and conferences across India. Beyond her professional pursuits, she enjoys travelling, reading fiction, and exploring food—while intentionally staying away from social media.
